Today is finally the day! The Gaspereau run has picked up, which means it's time for filed adventures to begin! This year has seen a late start to the season, likely as a result of cold water temperatures. Alewife spawning runs are temperature-dependent, requiring a minimum of about 10°C. Migration typically begins in late April/early May, peaks in late May/early June, and is completed by late June/early July. This year, however, the run did not start until almost May 20th! The same delays have been observed in other anadromous species and in other spawning rivers across the province. The water is still fairly cold, and may drop again later in the week, but for now the fish are running, which means it's time to get to work!
